About us

We believe migration is more than a legal or administrative process.
It is a deeply human experience, connected to rights, freedom, and equal opportunities.

Not everyone migrates under the same conditions.
Some face urgency, vulnerability, and limited options.
Others move with greater resources, information, and freedom of choice.
These differences matter — because they shape access to systems, rights, and opportunities for social participation.

Our approach is grounded in social work and in a person-centred perspective.
The support we offer is based on accompanying, clarifying, and enabling — fostering autonomy, informed decision-making, and greater confidence throughout the migration process.

We work from values such as social justice, equal opportunities, and shared responsibility, understood as a conscious and collective commitment to the community we live in.

Who is behind Social Expats

My name is Sandra Ordoño.
I have a background in social work and psychology and work independently supporting migrants in Portugal.

This combination of training and practice allows me to understand both the emotional and relational dimensions of migration, as well as how administrative systems and procedures work in Portugal.

My work is centred on the person and their concrete needs, respecting their life path, context, and decision-making capacity.

As a foreigner living in Portugal myself, my personal migration experience also shapes the way I work — reinforcing a practice based on empathy, clarity, and respect for different migration realities.

Social Expats was born from professional experience in migration processes and from a commitment to offering humane, informed, and responsible social support, so that each person can build their life in Portugal with greater security, autonomy, and presence.
